Phil Parkinson reveals he tried to sign Sunderland striker for Bolton Wanderers

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson has revealed he tried to sign striker Charlie Wyke for Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2018.

The new Black Cats manager missed out on signing him for the Trotters to his current side and he is looking forward to him returning from injury.

Wyke, who is 26 years-old, has managed just seven goals since making the move to the Stadium of Light from Bradford City.

The former Middlesbrough and Carlisle United striker could play a key part in the Black Cats’ push for the Play-Offs in the second half of this season.

Parkinson has said, as per a report by the Chronicle Live: “He is a player we tried to sign at Bolton. He is a good player, he can hold up the ball, he has got good awareness around him, he is fit, running wise he looks in really good shape.”

“We need options at the top of the pitch. We analyse certain games and what we need and we really do need that firepower and the options to change things around. Charlie’s a good player, they all have their own different qualities and it’s just good to have the option of playing Charlie when he’s ready and match fit.”

Sunderland are in a poor run of form and have slipped to 11th in League One. They are three points off the Play-Offs and take on Gillingham away today as they look to close the gap.
