Cheltenham Town 0-1 Carlisle United

Sam Lavelle's first-half goal earned already-relegated Carlisle a 1-0 victory at Cheltenham, denting the home side's survival bid.

Cheltenham knew a win would lift them out of the bottom four in League One for the first time since mid-August, but Carlisle were the better side during a cagey first half.

Joe Nuttall missed a good opportunity to give Cheltenham the lead in the sixth minute, side-footing wide after Liam Sercombe's pass.

Georgie Kelly saw a shot saved by Luke Southwood at the other end and Luke Armstrong fired wide of the near post.

Jack Armer blasted one over the bar for the Cumbrians, but the deadlock was broken three minutes before half-time.

Jack Robinson's corner was headed back across goal by Ben Barclay and Lavelle touched it in from close range.

Cheltenham sent on four substitutes at half-time and changed formation, resulting in some early pressure on the visitors' goal.

But goalkeeper Harry Lewis was rarely troubled and Southwood had to fly at full stretch to keep out a looping effort from Jon Mellish in the 77th minute.

All I can say is thanks to Carlisle. The struggle to survive is brutal and obviously I'm hoping the Vale can stay in L1. Very tough game for us tomorrow but at least we can retain some hope.
I recall Paul Simpson forecasting Carlisle's struggle and the reasons why in August, he was correct and his analysis applies to us as well, basically strikers are beyond the budget. The jump from L2 is tough.

I feel so sorry for Darrell Clarke. He’s a great manager and it’s not his fault the squad is so brittle. I hope for his sake they make it.

After the Shrewsbury game, I asked Carlisle fans to get really behind their club and climb the ‘current form’ table - This will bode well for confidence and poss Duv 1 return! Looks like you guys are doing just that!

That performance was not good enough for the National league let alone league 2 where we are free falling to. 2nd half an improvement on the first half. The team are shot shy. Perhaps the whole team and the manager should be shown the door and start again. What we had tonight was a team not fit to wear the shirt.

Darrell Clarke has had a lot of tragedy in his life but will carry the can if Cheltenham have no shots on target again & go down. Port Vale & Burton are poor but Port Vale have turned the corner

Carlisle should been down to 10 men in first 10 mins for blatant punch. Cheltenham very poor first half but did deserve something out of the game and would have got it had it not been for once again very poor officials, time wasting tactics by Carlisle. I hope Cheltenham stay up but it appears to be we not only have to play against the team but also very poor officials. Bald ones especially
